Dream Map Pool for CS2: Legendary Maps That Should Always Be Played

In the world of Counter-Strike, the map pool is more than just a list of maps. It’s a collection of legends, an arena for the greatest dramas, and an endless field for creativity. With the change of eras and different versions of the game, some maps leave, others change beyond recognition. Recently, the community once again experienced shock from the removal of the long-awaited Train and the return of the controversial Anubis, which immediately sparked much discussion about the ideal map pool. Therefore, in this article we decided to compile that very collection of seven (or maybe more) maps that are CS icons. Not just balanced, but emotional, historical, and infinitely diverse – a dream map pool for CS2. Let’s dream.

Mirage – The Eternal University

Mirage – The Eternal University

If Counter-Strike is a language, then Mirage is its basic alphabet. Since June 12, 2013, it hasn’t left the competitive map pool, becoming the most studied and possibly the most balanced map in history. Here every corner, every pixel, and every grenade is known to absolutely everyone, from silvers to level 10 FACEIT players. It’s a pure test of skill, tactics, and discipline. Of course, after so many years many are already tired of the yellow walls and wooden boxes, but absolutely every player has their favorite position on this map. Whether it’s carpets on A, apartments on B, window, short, connector, or something else – you know your action pattern that rarely fails.

Dust2 – The World Cathedral

Dust2 – The World Cathedral

A classic that unites everyone. Taking long, sniper duels on mid, legendary wallbangs through doors, and skirmishes in dark – this is the DNA of the game. The map has given us many highlights, and some have even been honored with graffiti (for example, fnatic’s 4 AWPs). KQLY’s controversial jump, which showed how thin the line between genius and cheater is. And who could forget s1mple’s brilliant B site retake, where he threw away his AWP to draw the opponent’s aim? Dust2 is Counter-Strike itself, which is exactly why the developers didn’t drag their feet and quickly returned the map to the pool.

Nuke – The Peak of Team Mastery

Nuke – The Peak of Team Mastery

One of the most complex and varied maps in the game’s entire history. Here victory goes not to a collection of bright individuals, but to a perfectly tuned team mechanism. Most long winning streaks during their own eras, such as NIP, Astralis, NAVI, Vitality, were precisely on Nuke, and this is no coincidence. The map requires flawless communication, lightning-fast rotations, excellent understanding of what’s happening in the round, and to some degree unconventional thinking. Playing defense turns into a constant risky dance between floors, and most successful plant executions end with a bomb explosion, from which it’s better to immediately run to respawn.

Cobblestone – A Legend That's Missed

Cobblestone – A Legend That's Missed

Old-timers cry looking at the empty slot in the menu and dream of seeing that very stone castle on it. Cobblestone isn’t just a map, but an entire era, closely tied to the most coveted relic among skins – AWP | Dragon Lore. Many joke that VALVE won’t return it precisely because of this, so as not to devalue the legend, and in our opinion, there’s some truth in this joke. If before we linked our account while watching the Major to get the coveted souvenir package, now it could be bought for a couple of bucks. Maybe just update the collection? Cobblestone 2027, sounds good? Absolutely! And what moments it gave us! Snax’s 1v5 on pistol round or Zeus burning in a molotov in the Major final…

Cache – Everyone's Favorite

Cache – Everyone's Favorite

A map that has virtually no haters and for whose return there are already huge numbers of hints, both from the community and VALVE themselves. Its setting, style, and compact but not cramped design won everyone over and haven’t let go to this day. It’s full of unusual angles, positions, textures, and requires a special approach. But most importantly, Cache forever entered history thanks to s1mple and his incredible no-scope shots while jumping. Then he didn’t just win the round – he changed the perception of what’s possible in the game and wrote one of the first chapters in the legend of the greatest player in CS:GO history.

Ancient – A Successful Experiment

Ancient – A Successful Experiment

Added relatively recently, Ancient quickly won the community’s love. VALVE’s constant adjustments at the beginning of its journey led to an almost perfect balance between attack and defense. The map allows playing both super-aggressively and patiently, encouraging creativity and resourcefulness. Last year the developers released its night version – the best sign that the map pleased them and will stay with us for a long time. If VALVE takes such a bold step and completely removes the familiar light tones, it will be a truly revolutionary move, at least visually, and may help attract new viewers.

Tuscan – CS:GO's Unfulfilled Dream

Tuscan – CS:GO's Unfulfilled Dream

In CS:GO this map never made it to the big pro scene, remaining a favorite of pub players. But its potential is enormous, especially remembering its popularity in previous versions of the game. It was Tuscan that gave us one of the most recognizable moments in CS 1.6 history – Edward’s legendary ace with the USP-S. This clip became the game’s calling card for years. Including Tuscan in the expanded CS2 map pool is a chance to give a second life to a forgotten gem and see what it’s capable of in the hands of modern players with new grenade types and game mechanics.

9-Map Pool: Myth or Reality?

Such thoughts have been flickering in the community for a long time, and it’s not without reason. First, too many maps are just lying idle waiting for their chance. Second, it would make competitive CS even more competitive, because now there won’t be situations where a team has their best map taken away and they’re forced to look for a new signature. Regular users would definitely benefit from such an innovation, as they could launch a ranked match on their favorite map. So what maps should complete the final list of the ideal map pool?

Inferno – An Old Friend Who's Always in Shape

When something needed to be removed from the map pool, many bet it would be Inferno. But the "old-timer" turned out to be more alive than anyone, survived another reshuffle, and it must be admitted, quite deservedly, as the map has a high percentage of played matches. Its calling card is the famous "banana." This narrow alley became a place for countless highlights and a real proving ground for endlessly flying grenades. It was here that friberg from NIP was crowned the "King of Banana," and the developers left him eternal tribute by naming the street Adam Street (in honor of his real name). Inferno is a classic that never gets old.

Overpass – Sniper's Dream

Overpass – Sniper's Dream

A dream map for AWP lovers. Long distances, many boost spots, and safe positions for scoping create ideal conditions for sniper domination. However, its true essence lies in complex, multi-layered tactical gameplay, which is why the map often feels quite slow and is subject to viewer criticism. Also, it was here that one of the loudest scandals in esports history erupted – the questionable boost from fnatic against LDLC, and year after year players in pubs find alternative ways to execute it.

Nostalgic Trip Through Hostage Maps

Nostalgic Trip Through Hostage Maps

What about those who remember that CS has another mode? For them we’ve compiled a separate top:

  • Assault: A classic from CS 1.6, the perfect map for pub chaos. Storming a terrorist-packed hangar with one single wide passage, a closed door, and a narrow tunnel – quite the challenge.
  • Italy: Cozy streets with shootouts in endless corridors. Music, atmosphere, and the feeling that you’re in a European action movie from the ’90s.
  • Mansion: A luxurious mansion that’s incredibly difficult to storm. Getting inside and taking a hostage is only half the battle; the main task is getting out alive. A map for more intimate but no less fierce skirmishes.
